What are the Most Popular Dog Breeds in Australia?

Top 10 dog breeds Australians are going mutts for in 2022

Close to half of Australian households have a dog. So it’s no secret that they’re a pup-ular housemate.

But have you ever seen dogs trot down the footpath or race around the dog park, and wondered… what are the most common?

We know every breed is special. But in 2022, there are a handful of tail-waggers that are particularly favourable amongst us Aussies.

And we’re counting down the top 10. So dig in and find out if your pup (or future pup) has made the list.

(Watch out: some of these breeds might be devising a plan to take over the local dog park… very soon.)

10. Spoodle

Active, affectionate, attention-hogs

Coming in at number 10 is the Spoodle (aka Cockapoo).

A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, Spoodles make for handsome, happy hounds. And with their ‘shaggy hair, don’t care’ attitude, they rock a healthy coat without shedding. Perfect for owners with allergies.

You may have also heard Spoodles are oodles of fun. It’s true! So get ready to play peekaboo with your Cockapoo!

9. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Lovable, lively, lapdogs

With King Charles taking the throne, it’s time for this pup to take its royal duty as lap sitter.

Paw-fect for older owners or families with children, these sensitive Spaniels seek company and cuddles. So you may want to look into your work’s ‘dogs in the office’ policy!

And while they do still need a daily walk to keep their tail wagging, these pups are pretty laid back. Their main philosophy? ‘In the face of adversity, roll over.’

8. Labradoodle

Cheerful, charming, cheeky

When we think ‘kit and caboodle’, we think Labradoodle!

Why? They’re a cross between a loyal Labrador and a precious Poodle. Everything you could paw-ssibly want from a pet!

Think a Vanity Fur cover-worthy coat that’s shed-free. A playful yet gentle personality. And a brilliant brain that still makes silly slip-ups.

There’s no surprise your new best mate came in at number 8!

7. Labrador Retriever

Friendly, faithful, full of beans

We’ve been doing some research, and the lab results are in.

We wanted to find out which dog breed is the most energetic, easy to train and eager to please. And just as we hypothesised, the result points towards… the Labrador!

Not only are these clever canines a family favourite, but these dogs have jobs!

Every day, thousands of Labradors clock in an out: assisting people with visual impairments, supporting our military, and protecting our borders. Talk about woof-life balance!

6. Groodle

Clever, caring, chaotic

If you’re looking for your new best fur-end, look no further than a Golden Doodle (also known as a Groodle)!

Groodles are litter-ally bred to be your companion. A crossbreed of Poodles and Golden Retrievers, they’re affectionate, adorable and allergy friendly.

So if you or anyone in your family’s sinus sensitivities are keeping your pet picking on a tight leash, consider a Groodle.

5. German Shepherd

Trustworthy, trainable, territorial

Hailing from Germany (duh!), German Shepherds were originally herding hounds. This means they don’t like to be left alone – and have buckets of energy!

So if you’re someone who likes to keep active, these pups are perfect for you.

But keep in mind: while their protective nature makes them a family favourite, they can become overprotective. Make sure you train them to only greet children and other animals with a polite “guten tag”.

4. French Bulldog

Cute, comical, cuddly

We know what you’re thinking: “French Bulldogs are number 4? Sacré bleu!”

But over the past decade, these pooches have gained popularity points for their personality. And their adorable lil’ faces! Fun-loving, affectionate and well-behaved – frenchies are one of a kind.

But before you welcome one into your home, read up on Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome to ensure you’re helping your hound stay healthy.

3. Border Collie

Fun-loving, fit, family dog

Some say Border Collies are the most intelligent dog breed. And really, considering how easy they are to train, these pups are borderline geniuses!

Traditionally bred for working, Border Collies thrive on the job. So if you need help around the house, why not have your collie do the laundry?

These devoted doggies will also shower you with love. But remember: they do have a protective streak. So make sure they’re properly socialised early, to avoid any nasty interactions later!

2. Golden Retriever

Gentle, gorgeous, goofy

Someone call Sherlock Bones! We’ve got a case. The suspect is a four-legged friend who makes people laugh, sticks by their side, and loves them unconditionally.

Who could it be? A Golden Retriever of course!

With their fun-loving, loyal and lively temperaments – it’s no wonder us Aussies love our goldies!

1. Cavoodle

Doting, designer, darlings

Alert the pup-arazzi… Australia’s top dog has been announced. It’s the Cavoodle!

A cross between a miniature Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these pretty pooches prove that big things come in small packages.

With bundles of energy, a loving personality and a low-shedding coat, these fun-sized dogs are a pet lover’s dream.

From small dogs and Spoodles to big dogs and Cavoodles, there’s something for everyone in the dog collection
